The City of Deerfield Beach keeps a Pier Renovations FAQ that is the official record of the project to repair and upgrade the 976-foot International Fishing Pier. This article puts the FAQ’s numbers in date order, adds the one news report we use, labelled as news, and lists what nobody has confirmed. We checked every source on Oct. 20, 2026.
Where things stood on Oct. 20, 2026
The City’s FAQ still gives “Summer 2025” as the anticipated reopening and has not been updated. The City’s pier page lists daily hours, a rate table effective Feb. 23, 2026, and a notice closing the pier from sunset to sunrise from Oct. 20, 2026, due to maintenance needs, with no end date. The City has not published a completion date or a final cost.
The log, date by date
Dec. 12, 2023: the contract
The FAQ says three bids came in under RFP #24-03-BA and that the City ranked Brothers Construction, Inc. highest of the three. The base pier repair contract was awarded at the City Commission meeting on Dec. 12, 2023. The FAQ puts the cost of the base repairs at $3,234,075.

March 5, 2024: enhancements added
On March 5, 2024 the City Commission approved $1,517,500 in enhancements. The FAQ lists them: demolition of the existing pavilion, two new 20 by 20 foot Ipe pavilions, electrical and lighting for the western pavilion, six new custom fish cleaning stations with water hookup, 15 new park benches, replacement fence and gates, and an illuminated welcome sign. The FAQ also says the contractor gave a $140,040 discount for a full pier closure.

June 3, 2024: the closure, as WSVN reported it
This entry is news, not a City statement. WSVN 7News reported on June 3, 2024 that the pier would close “starting Monday” for a “$4.6 million extensive project, estimated to take 14 to 18 months”. It listed railings, lighting, pavilions, signage, fish-cutting stations, decking and public art, and gave damage from Hurricane Nicole in 2022 as the cause. We use the cost and the 14 to 18 months as WSVN’s figures. The City’s own figures are in the FAQ.

Summer 2025: the City’s estimate
The FAQ says “Base Pier Repairs are anticipated to take 12 to 16 months”, allows 90 more days for the enhancements, and gives “Anticipated reopening of pier to the public Summer 2025”. The FAQ gives no start date. If the work began the week of the closure WSVN reported, 12 to 16 months plus 90 days ends between Sept. 1, 2025 and Jan. 1, 2026, and WSVN’s 14 to 18 months ends between Aug. 3, 2025 and Dec. 3, 2025. That is our arithmetic, not a City date, and the City has not said when, or whether, the work ended.
- The city's Pier Renovations FAQ still says "Anticipated reopening of pier to the public Summer 2025" and "Base Pier Repairs are anticipated to take 12 to 16 months" (FAQ not updated since; the pier page now lists normal hours and February 23, 2026 rates). Undated: a City alert we could not read
The City’s news site had an alert titled “Cast Your Worries Away: Phase 1 of Deerfield Beach Pier is Now Open!” When we tried it on Oct. 20, 2026 the page returned a not found error, and we could not load an archived copy. Other sites describe what it said. We have not read it, so we do not repeat their dates or details.
Feb. 23, 2026: a new rate table
The City’s pier page carries a rate table marked effective Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, with sightseeing at $2 and fishing at $4, and lists posted hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, which the Oct. 20, 2026 notice below cuts back to sunrise to sunset. The FAQ was not changed to match. Our pier fees article has the full table.
Oct. 20, 2026: closed sunset to sunrise
The pier page now says: “As of October 20, 2026, we will be CLOSED SUNSET through SUNRISE until further notice, due to maintenance needs.” It gives no end date and does not say what the maintenance is. Whether it has anything to do with the renovation is not stated. Our night closure article covers what it means for a visit.

The money, added up
The City’s two figures, $3,234,075 for the base repairs and $1,517,500 for the enhancements, add up to $4,751,575. Take off the $140,040 closure discount and the total is $4,611,535. That is our sum of the FAQ’s numbers, and it sits close to the $4.6 million WSVN reported. The City does not publish a final cost, so we cannot say what was spent in the end.
Oct. 20, 2026 is 1,043 days after the contract award. In that time the FAQ has not been brought up to date.
What is not confirmed
- A completion date, or a City statement that the project has ended.
- Whether every enhancement in the FAQ was built as listed. The FAQ describes what was approved, not what was handed over.
- Whether a “Phase 2” exists and where it stands. The alert that described phases has been removed.
- Whether the Oct. 20, 2026 night closure is linked to the renovation work.
- A final cost.
We will not fill those gaps with guesses. When the City updates its FAQ or pier page, this log gets a new line.

Pier history questions

Was the pier recently renovated?
Yes. The city's renovation FAQ says Brothers Construction won the base repair contract on December 12, 2023, for $3,234,075. On March 5, 2024, the Commission added $1,517,500 in enhancements, including two 20-by-20-foot Ipe pavilions, six new fish cleaning stations, 15 benches, new fencing and an illuminated welcome sign. News reports (WSVN, June 2024) said the work followed damage from Hurricane Nicole in 2022. The city has not published a completion date, and its FAQ still shows the old "Summer 2025" reopening estimate.
How old is the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse?
HLPS says Russell Wheel and Foundry Co. of Detroit built it in 1906. It was first lit on March 8, 1907, and stands 136 feet to the lens room and 147 feet overall. HLPS has scheduled a 120th Birthday Tour for March 13, 2027.
