The beach on both sides of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier belongs to the City of Deerfield Beach. The City runs the pier, the sand, the beach parking and Ocean Rescue, the lifeguard division. So the rules on this page are City rules. The City uses the name Main Beach for its parking lot at 149 SE 21st Ave. and for one parking zone. It has no separate page for a “Main Beach” area, so this guide uses “main beach” for the guarded stretch around the pier. For the pier itself, see pier hours and fees.
Lifeguards: nine towers on one mile
Ocean Rescue protects a one-mile stretch of beach with nine lifeguard towers. Tower #1 is at the north end. Tower #9 stands directly in front of the Embassy Suites hotel. The City says the division is certified by the United States Lifesaving Association.

Two published schedules
The City lists lifeguard hours in two places, and they do not match. The Ocean Rescue page says 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through March and 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from March through November. The Beach page says 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 365 days a year. Both pages were checked on Oct. 20, 2026. The hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. fall inside both versions, so that is the window we would plan a swim around. Outside it, assume no guard is on the tower.
- Ocean Rescue page: "Lifeguards are present from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM November through March and 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM March through November." City of Deerfield Beach: Ocean Rescue
- CONFLICT: the city's Beach page says "Lifeguards are present from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm 365 days a year", which differs from the Ocean Rescue page. City of Deerfield Beach: Beach
Conditions and flags
Ocean Rescue is based at 71 Ocean Way (SE 21st Ave.), on the second floor of the Fire Station. The beach conditions line is (954) 480-4413, and the City also publishes a Beach Conditions and Flags dashboard. Swim near a staffed tower, read the flags before you go in, and ask the lifeguard if you are unsure. We do not list flag colours here because we have not sourced their meanings.

Where you can swim and where you can surf
City Code bars swimming, snorkeling, diving, paddling, kayaking, surfing and kiteboarding within 150 feet (50 yards) of the fishing pier. That keeps swimmers clear of fishing lines. Swimmers are asked to stay within 50 yards of the shoreline and to swim in a lifeguard-supervised area.
- "Swimming, snorkeling, and diving are prohibited 150 feet around the pier. Section 50-112(f) of the City Code prohibits swimming, paddling, kayaking, surfing, or kiteboard/surfing within 50 yards or 150 feet of the City fishing pier." City of Deerfield Beach: Livestream Cameras (legal disclaimer)
The surf zone: two descriptions
The City describes the surfing area in two ways. The Beach page says surfing is permitted on the north side of the pier and south of tower #7. The Safety and Rules page says hard boards (surf, skim, stand-up and similar) are permitted only on the north side of the pier and south of Tower #5. Both agree on the north side of the pier. They differ on the tower that marks the other edge, so ask the lifeguard which flag line applies that day. All surfboards and bodyboards must be leashed, and swimming is not allowed in the surfing area.

The Blue Wave claim
The City’s Beach page calls this an award-winning “Blue Wave” beach, a designation from the Clean Beach Council based on water quality, beach conditions, safety services, public information and habitat conservation. The page gives no award year, so we cannot say whether the designation is current.
